The Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds in America in 2023

Back to back wins for America’s newest favorite breed! Today, the American Kennel Club announced that the French Bulldog is the most popular dog breed in the country for the second year in a row. These mighty little lap dogs earned the top spot on the AKC’s annual survey of the most popular dog breeds in America. The AKC based their list on the number of registrations received in 2023.

Last year, the Frenchie pushed the Labrador Retriever to #2 spot, ending that breed’s remarkable 31-year run at #1. The lovable Lab repeated in the runner up spot in 2023, and rounding out the 2023 top five are the Golden Retriever (#3), the German Shepherd (#4) and the Poodle (#5) – the same top 5 breeds as last year.

The biggest jump on this year’s list belongs to the Dachshund. The diminutive hounds rose from #9 in 2022 to #6 in 2023. These little dogs are on the move!

Here’s the full list of 2023’s top 10 most popular dog breeds, starring some adorable DogWatch Dogs from all across the country!
