Selecting the perfect name for your new puppy is a big task. Which name will best suit his or her looks, attitude and spirit? Which name do you want to announce every time you walk through the front door? If you’re at a loss, consider one of these five trendy, fun and meaningful options. Maybe your dog’s new name is on this list, or it will inspire you to find your own unique name for your new best friend!

1. Magnolia

Who doesn’t love Chip and Joanna Gaines, the husband and wife duo behind the hit HGTV show “Fixer Upper”? The Waco, TX homes they “flip” are each more stunning than the last, and their business, Magnolia Homes, has spun off into a market, restaurant, furniture line and soon, their own TV channel. In addition to their love of farmhouse accessories, open-concept living spaces and reclaimed wood, Chip and Joanna also love animals, and have over 60 of them that currently live on their 40-acre farm. (Wow!) So next time you bring home your own new fur friend, consider Magnolia, or another floral-inspired name (see below). It’s perfectly on-trend, and much easier on the tongue than “Shiplap”!

More floral dog names: Petunia, Rose, Buttercup, Poppy, Violet and Clover

2. Eleven

Have you already binged “Stranger Things 3” on Netflix? If not, you’re missing out on one of the most exciting TV shows of the year. “Stranger Things” has got it all: laughs, scares, big mysteries and lots of 80s nostalgia. (Jazzercise, anybody?) The breakout character of the series is Eleven, a telekinetic young girl with the power and fearlessness to take on the scariest of enemies and save her friends. Loyalty, brains, tenacity and a love of junk food? Sounds like a good fit for your new puppy, too! Just don’t leave any Eggos out where she can find ’em!

More Stranger Things dog names: Dustin & Steve, Sheriff Hopper, Max (short for Maxine), Lucas, Robin and Barb (RIP!)

3. Sully

No doubt you remember the now famous photo of the late President George H.W. Bush’s service dog Sully laying behind the President’s casket in Houston last December. President Bush, who had a form of Parkinson’s disease, was paired with Sully in June 2018 with the help of America’s VetDogs, who train and place service dogs with veterans across the country. After President Bush’s death, Sully took on a new post at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he helps many wounded veterans with their recovery. What a better way to pay tribute to this smart, loyal and hard-working pup than by bringing home your very own “Sully”!

(FYI – Sully the dog got his name from Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III, the pilot who landed a passenger plane in the Hudson River in New York in 2009 and saved all those on board. With this name, you can honor TWO heroes at once!)

4. Uno

Uno made history in 2008 as the first Beagle to win the Best in Show title at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The petite pup attracted fans worldwide, and became one of the most beloved show dogs of the century. Uno appeared on TV shows, shook paws with celebrities, politicians and the public alike, and even rode on the Peanuts float at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. After his retirement, Uno’s grandniece, Miss P, followed in his footsteps, winning Best in Show at Westminster in 2015. Sadly, Uno crossed the rainbow bridge in September 2018. What a better way to honor Uno’s legacy than to name your own hound after this famous champion who brought delight to millions of dog lovers around the world.

More famous show dog names: King, CJ, Sky, Rumor, Malachy, Stump, Bean and Banana Joe

5. Doug (the Pug)

With his sassy tongue, enviable wardrobe, pop culture-themed videos and perfectly alliterative name, Doug the Pug is the internet’s newest pet superstar. And it’s easy to see why. Who could resist a dog who just wants to make friends, eat pizza and cuddle up in his comfy PJs? 6 million Facebook fans and almost 4 million Instagram followers have fallen for this smushy-faced pup. Follow his rhyming lead with your new pup (see below) or channel his silly spirit with your own uniquely fun name for your new future social media star!
